Consortium for Health Action
Play Track Act
Based on the CDC’s Milestones, this app allows caregivers to track a child’s developmental milestones and access resources on progress and shortcomings.
Role: UX Writer | Timeline: January — May 2022
BACKGROUND
Aimed at developing countries, the app focuses on education around the early signs of Autism and other developmental issues.
As a volunteer, I got to meet and work with other emerging UX professionals. It was interesting to learn how to work with cross-functional team members to create a viable product for this organization.
As volunteers early in our careers we were still learning, but here are some key principles we learned about UX writing through this project:
CONSISTENCY
By creating a content style guide for the organization and the product, we were able to set guidelines to follow and refer back to. This made sure designs were consistent, by adding a caption or keeping sentence case, like below.
ITERATIONS
In jam sessions, we would work to refine the work we did separately. It was important to collaborate and I valued the opportunity to work with another writer.
We would play around with copy until we had what we felt was right, refining it as we went along.
INFLUENCING DESIGN
This was the first time I experienced how content can influence design decisions. We understood the importance of having clear content but realized how the design might affect the way our users digest the information and what that means for their user experience.
To the left is an example of how we rearranged the account screen menu to make the page easier to digest and navigate.
FINAL THOUGHTS
Writing for Play, Track, Act offered a great learning experience. From working with localization to creating a comprehensive user experience, to translating medical jargon. This was an interesting first experience that sparked my interest in UX writing and content design.
